My passion for Copper Red Glaze

Updated: Apr 21, 2024

My passion for mastering a Copper Red Glaze and firing started many years ago as a young Potter.

I saw a beautiful copper red glazed vase exhibited at a gallery. From this moment I was hooked.

After many attempts and failures over the years I felt at some stage I would achieve it!

Copper red is a very prized glaze dating back many hundreds of years to the Ming Dynasty 1368 to 1644. There are many stories as regards the origins of the glaze firing the glaze needs.

My first successes were in a wood fired kiln. A timeless glaze that I never get tired of, a magic time of 2 days for the counter cool down and unpack the pottery.

The potters full attention is required while firing. A fine balance of oxidation and reduction. A very small quantity of copper oxide is added to the glaze.

So many variables sourcing raw materials weather conditions, etc during firing developing an instinct for the balance of oxidation and reduction

Luckily I haven’t got an Emperor to please!!

Just myself
